Protesters reach SC despite police cordon

ISLAMABAD: Police resorted to baton charge and teargas shelling to prevent protesters from reaching Supreme Court on Monday.
Aalmi Majlis Tahaffuz-i-Nabuwat had arranged the protest demanding the Supreme Court withdraw its judgement in Mubarak Sani case.
Earlier, rallies were taken out from different parts of the twin cities.
Protesters reached Express Chowk in the afternoon and set up a stage on a vehicle with a sound system installed on it to make speeches, police said.

A heavy contingent of police reached the spot. Police were also deployed behind the gate installed at the old parade ground.
The protesters delivered speeches and later marched towards the apex court building.
They put up resistance and succeeded to open the gate and remove the hurdles. In response, the police resorted to baton charge and used water canon to disperse them. They also fired teargas shells but the protesters reached Parliament House and the Supreme Court building.
They were carrying banners and chanting slogans. Before sunset, the protesters returned to Express Chowk and offered Maghreb prayers and dispersed peacefully, police added.
